Classic American Cheeseburger

Cheeseburger
Prep: 15 mins Cook: 10 mins Yield: 4 servings

There's nothing quite like a homemade cheeseburger. High quality beef, perfectly melted cheese, and fresh toppings make this a winner every time.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean / 20% fat is best)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 4 high-quality hamburger buns (brioche or sesame seed)
  • Your favorite toppings: crisp lettuce, tomato slices, red onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard

Instructions

  1. Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently form them into patties, making them slightly wider than the buns (they will shrink as they cook). Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent puffing.
  2. Generously season both sides of each patty with salt and pepper.
  3. Preheat your grill or a cast-iron skillet to high heat.
  4. Place the patties on the heat. Cook without moving them for about 4-5 minutes to get a nice crust. Flip the patties.
  5. Cook for another 3-4 minutes for medium doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty and cover the pan/grill to melt the cheese.
  6. Toast the buns lightly. Assemble your burgers with your favorite toppings and serve immediately.
